Whenever I want to try out a new location for my pet photography, I usually use my own dogs as models to make sure the location will be a good one. They love to pose, and in my very biased opinion, they make beautiful subjects. :-) Here are a couple shots of Luna in the woods near my house; this is a beautiful time of year because of the leaves changing color and the gorgeous autumn sunset light.

Roo the australian shepherd {Sacramento pet photography}

Meet Roo. He’s an adorable australian shepherd dog from Sacramento that was boarding with me at Sierra Dogs, and his owner was interested in having a photo shoot. So I took Roo out to romp, and discovered that Roo is a ham for the camera! It can be tough to handle the camera AND the leash, but it’s always fun. Keep in mind that if your dog is unable to be off-leash in your desired photo shoot location, in most cases I can use a special long-line I have and photoshop it out in final prints, as I did in most of the photos below.

People often ask if I photograph anything but dogs. While the majority of my photo shoots have dogs as subjects, I also enjoy working with horses, cats, goats, birds, and other pets, and sometimes I let their people get in front of the lens, too. :-) Here are a couple of shots I took of a beautiful horse during a mini-session in the last moments before sunset.

Black & White Photos

Sometimes the look of a particular dog, or his expression, just calls out for black and white or sepia photos, rather than color. I thought the nobility of this German shorthaired pointer, and the far away gaze of this doberman mix, were best shown off in black and white. One of my favorite things about shooting in digital format is the ability to make these decisions during the editing process.

Is there anything cuter than an 8-week old puppy? Yes — 4 of them! I was lucky enough to have a litter of basset hound puppies come to visit Sierra Dogs this week, to continue their socialization and to get a few photos taken. Adorable!

New blogsite!

I’m excited to launch my new Sierra Luna Photography blogsite! After I re-branded my business, I decided to integrate website and blog so that people could see everything in one place — basic info as well as the most up-to-the-minute posts and photos. This site will be a work in progress for a while, so please be patient, but take a peek around and tell me what you think!

For those of you who don’t know, I chose the name Sierra Luna Photography to honor the two things which inspired its creation: my dog Luna, and my dog boarding and training business, Sierra Dogs.
